Ayra Starr is a 19-year-old Nigerian Afro-pop singer, composer, and fashion model. She was born on June 14, 2002, in Nigeria. Ayra Starr was born in the Nigerian state of Edo and reared in Lagos. She comes from a family of four (now three after the death of her father) and has one sibling.

From a young age, Ayra developed a penchant for singing, songwriting, and modeling. She composed songs and wrote them down in her notebook in her leisure time, and she was also a member of her church choir. She began coming to a studio near her house to produce music, accompanied by her brother, and she also began doing renditions of some of her favorite songs.

In 2020, her musical career took a turn for the better after Don Jazzy, the owner of Mavin Records (one of Nigeria’s largest record companies), spotted some of her covers and song videos on her Instagram profile and contacted her. Don Jazzy began fostering her musical career, and the two collaborated on a few songs before signing her to Mavin Records in 2020. On January 21, 2021, the record agreement was made public. On the 22nd of January 2021, one day after her record deal was announced, she released her debut self-titled 5-track EP.
